Ben Traverse

Grand Rapids-based traditional folk musician and member of the Earthwork Music Collective. Ben plays a variety of traditional styles including old-time, bluegrass, Celtic, and sea shanties, all with a focus on the history and culture that fostered it.

Traverse has spent the better part of a decade cutting their teeth with many prominent forces in Michigan’s folk scene. They found their passion steeping in the rich history of traditional folk music. Drawing inspiration from Pete Seeger, Alan Lomax, and countless others, Traverse brings a unique, youthful enthusiasm to a rich and storied musical tradition.

Big Bill Broonzy and Pete Seeger played together at Circle Pines Center in July of 1957.  Adam Gottlieb, Victor McManemy, and Bluesdad will share these influential songwriters and musicians stories and songs.

J Hobbs

Music has been a lifelong passion of J Hobbs. In 2006, he joined his brother’s band and began dedicating more time to music, as a percussion player, rapper, and hype man. From 2009 to 2013, he played in Funktion, a 7pc Funk Soul Groove Band from Kalamazoo, and played over 600 shows through 26 states. In late 2013, he moved to Austin, Texas, and started playing shows under his long-time stage name brotha James.

In 2016, he started combining motivational speaking with music, and in 2017, began combining speaking, facilitation and music. In 2022, he shed the alias ‘brotha James’ and became ‘J Hobbs’ in 2022, honoring his family’s roots. He makes music that empowers people to be at their best.

Peter Madcat Ruth is a Grammy Award-winning virtuoso harmonica player based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan. He has established an international reputation through his exhilarating, riveting virtuosity on the harmonica. His expertise on this instrument has amazed audiences world-wide.

Peter Madcat Ruth’s C.A.R.Ma. Quartet plays an eclectic blend of traditional and improvisational music. American Roots Music, Blues, Folk Music, Jazz, Rock, and World Music are all part of the mix.

Inspired by New Orleans, born of the Great Lakes: Great Lakes Brass draws from New Orleans traditions, where brass bands express the pulse of communities; celebrating life, mourning loss, and looking ahead. Reverence for history is intertwined with ongoing creative adaptation, and our pledge to play it forward.

Trumpet, trombone, and saxophone play familiar melodies driven by sousaphone and percussion. On the street or the stage, our music moves. Based in Fennville, MI – Great Lakes Brass features a lineup of remarkable Michigan musicians, led by Fred Bueltmann (Sousaphone), including Josh Keller (Trumpet), Jarad Saxsquatch Selner (Saxophone), Scott Dumas (Trombone), Dede Alder (Drums), Carolyn Koebel (Drums), Andrew Schrock (Vocals), Josiah DeNooyer and many others.
